I’m writing these instructions for someone new to programming who’s going to use Visual Studio Code to get started on a TypeScript project hosted on GitLab. If anybody else finds these instructions useful, great.

Terminal: Hold down the command key and press the spacebar to launch Spotlight. Type “Terminal” and press return. You’re going to use Terminal a lot, so you might want to do a two-finger click on its icon in the dock, then choose Options, Keep in Dock.

Brew: Go to brew.sh and copy the command line they show you. Paste it into Terminal. Now you have the brew command available.

Install git: In Terminal, type this: brew install git

Configure git: Follow GitLab’s instructions for setting your name and email.

GitLab: Sign up for an account.

ssh: Follow the steps in GitLab’s instructions.
